How To Turn Off Your MIME Settings

If your post came through with a bunch of extra characters thrown in  for good measure (kinda like a bad Harold Robbins book), then you  might be guilty of indulging in MIME.

No, that doesn't mean you paint your face white and try to find your way out of an invisible box!

Here is the "official explanation"....

"Please check your email program settings which specify how your mail
messages are composed. These settings can be found under Preferences
in Netscape or under Tools in Outlook Express. If you have a
different email program and can't find the settings, let us know.

You should set your program to use the PLAIN TEXT to compose messages
(this can always be overridden if you're not writing to the group)
and the MIME encoding should be turned off or set to "NONE"."

But, if you have problems getting this to work, just let me know and
we will have one of our more "technically minded" co-facs at FIBROM-L-REQUEST@COMMUNITY.LSOFT.COM
to help you  out!

The Fine Art of Snipping

Snipping is a courtesy so that FMily members don't have to endlessly
read the same text to get to the good stuff.

Snips go at the top of your post and should be just enough to
identify the original. You can also tuck small snips within your post
to identify a particular point.

It is also a real nice courtesy (although not a rule) to include the
names of those quoted if you are quoting more than one individual.
Example:

Angela> Why did I think of eggplant? That settles it, the brain is
definitely gone! <

To snip:

1. Highlight the portion that you wish to snip.
2. Click on edit menu and select either copy or cut. Copy reproduces
if you want to save the original message.
3. Place cursor in text of email and Paste.
4.  snip > and < endsnip are typed in manually. The little arrow
dooley is above the period and
comma. Some folks type snip>, some folks just >, up to you!

Easy two-fingered tip:  Cut is Cntrl x  Copy is Cntrl c and Paste is
Cntrl v   This works for most windows applications.

Happy snipping to the elegant!

Topic Use

"USING THE CORRECT TOPIC CHEAT SHEET

Printing this information and posting by your computer is highly recommended.
For more information, refer to your Welcome Message.

The mailing list sorts all messages by topic. If you don't use a topic, your mail will not reach the list. (For in-depth information about the topics, check your Welcome Message.) These are the ONLY topics the MIT computer will recognize:

ANN:      Announce (This topic is for use ONLY by the mailing list co-hosts.)
ADMIN:   Administration
CHAT:
CONJ:    Conjecture
DIS:       Disability
FMS:     Fibromyalgia Syndrome
HUM:     Humor
MEDQ:   The Mailbox for Medical Professionals ONLY
RES:      Research
SPIR:     Spiritual
SUP:     Support
VENT:

You MUST use a topic, a colon, a space, and title your e-mail. Otherwise your post will NOT reach the entire list.

EXAMPLE:

ADMIN: Need help with my subscription
CHAT: Going on vacation, anyone live in Atlanta?
CONJ: TV News says paint fumes cause chronic pain
DIS: Need assistance applying for Social Security
FMS: Where are Trigger Spots?
HUM: Lost: a spotted dog named Trigger
MEDQ: What is the difference between FMS and CMP?
RES: Sleep deprivation and pain
SPIR: Prayers for patience
SUP: Trying to explain to my co-workers...
VENT: Doctor refused my meds... again!

Composing a typical post would look like this:

To:       FIBROM-L@MITVMA.MIT.EDU
From:    Mary Smith <marysmith@smith.com>
Subject: FMS: Tinnitus
Cc:
Bc:
Attachments:

I would like information about tinnitus. I have some ringing or other noises in my ears. Is this associated with fibro, or is it something completely separate?

Thanks for your help,
Mary

Use of the MEDQ: Topic

MEDQuery is the newest topic on Fibrom-L. All list members are automatically subscribed to this topic. If you wish to have it removed, please follow the procedure at the bottom of this post.

MEDQuery (or MEDQ for short) allows list members to send GENERAL MEDICAL QUERIES ONLY to the medical professionals on Fibrom-L. Please title your post as follows:

MEDQ: (name of medical professional, if desired, and question here)

for example:

MEDQ: Dr. Nye, question regarding exercise
MEDQ: Devin Starlanyl, is guai helpful to everyone?

These medical professionals will not reply to any question requesting a second opinion, or interpretation of your tests or diagnosis from your Health Care Provider.

ONLY A QUERY to a medical professional and the response from those professionals will be allowed under this topic. Please post your original query only once. If you do not understand the response or
need an elaboration of the response, a follow-up post is permitted.

SENDING EMAIL TO OUR CONSULTANTS PRIVATELY  We leave this up to the individual consultant. As of 6/24/01 you may send private email to Dr. David Nye, but all posts and/or comments to Devin Starlanyl are to be made on the list only, no private email.

WHEN RESPONDING to an e-mail posted by one of the medical professionals, please send your reply ONLY TO THE LIST, and remove their names and addresses from the header!

Upon receiving a reply from one of our medical professionals, please take any further discussion among list members to another topic such as FMS, CONJ, SUP, CHAT, RES... whatever might be most appropriate.

To remove MEDQuery from your topics, send an e-mail to:

LISTSERV@COMMUNITY.LSOFT.COM

Leave the subject line blank.

In the body of the e-mail, type the command (type only what is shown in caps)

SET FIBROM-L TOPICS -MEDQ
(removes only the MEDQuery topic)
